Should Chelsea be in the race to sign David Bentley?
Just about every player with a wily agent is being linked with Chelsea right now. But oddly not David Bentley. The England wingman seems most likely to join Aston Villa, Liverpool, Spurs or even Manchester City (though I think his relationship with Sparkles Hughes might be strained by now).
Chelsea have had a terrible record of signing young England talent and wasting it of late, and signing Bentley (then playing him!) would be a great opportunity to change things for the better.
What's more for my money, a decent right winger is the one position where I think Chelsea definitely need to strengthen. Anyone who is a regular to Chelsea Pies will know I'm an avid SWP fan, but poor Wrighty never gets a look-in and I think he will be playing elsewhere next year. That leaves Malouda most likely to rampage down the wing, and you don't have to be Alan Hansen to know Florent is "terrible."
There are of course other world stars that could fill this role - notably Quaresma, but it'd be good to keep a few English faces in the side. Especially if Non-fat Frank is heading to Inter.
Sadly however, I think (due to the lack of Chelsea interest) Spurs will win the race to sign Bentley. A source close to him said in the papers today: "David wants to return to London and Spurs are interested. They'd love to do a deal but don't have the cash unless they sell." Hang on. Spurs need to sell? Cheeky bid for Berba anyone?
